Music Director/Keyboard - Derrick Lacasse Run Crew – Micaela Slotin & Bethany Greenbaum We are honored to dedicate this production to her memory. Her voice, her presence, her music, all represent something hopeful, and yes, fun and light-hearted. What better way for us to honor the passing of the legendary Olivia Newton John, who died after decades of struggling with cancer earlier this summer. ![]() For us, the operative work isn’t snarky, which suggests something negative, but cheeky, which implies that we’re all in on the joke and it’s for fun. Xanadu is filled with magic and optimism. Now, over forty years later, we look back at the music from this time and the innocence of what Olivia Newton John represented to so many of us with a great deal more nostalgia and affection. It made for a successful run though, both on Broadway and as a touring show. ![]() With Douglas Carter Beane on board to write the book, and melding the Xanadu story with another early 80’s cult film, Clash of the Titans, the musical poked fun at the source material mercilessly, in a way that was funny, but pretty snarky. The soundtrack for the film, however, featuring songs by Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra, and John Farrar, Olivia Newton John’s producer/songwriter, was a smash hit. Xanadu premiered on Broadway in 2007, based on the 1980 film starring Olivia Newton John that performed dismally at the box office, barely making back its $20m production costs. Xanadu was scheduled to be our spring musical in 2020, and we were mid-rehearsal when everything shut down that March, so it was only fitting that we picked things up again, and it certainly fit the bill as a fun and light-hearted musical. As the first full musical production at the Footlight Club since COVID, the near unanimous call was for something fun and light-hearted.
